This exhibition comprises of soundscapes and visual artworks made during a Toba based artist residency in the summer of 2018.

この展覧会のサウンドスケープとビジュアルアート作品は、2018年の夏に鳥羽で行ったアーティスト・イン・レジデンスで制作されたものです。
About this exhibition
This exhibition is made up of artworks developed as a result of an artist in residence held at ARToba in the summer of 2018. Artist, Linda DENNIS, and composer, Yumi MASHIKI worked together with local people to prepare the building for ARToba’s opening as a creative space, participated in many local activities, such as Bon Dance Festivals, Arashima Morning Market, Ama Diver Hut experience, etc, and conducted research into local customs. The participatory artwork exhibited here by Linda DENNIS was made for the 2018 Arashima Bon Dance Festival.The soundscapes of Yumi MASHIKI incorporate sounds captured during her time in Toba, and the pieces can be listened to online using the QR codes provided in the exhibition.
The artists wish to thank the people of Toba for their warm hospitality, and hope their appreciation can be expressed through these exhibited works.
展覧会について
この展覧会の作品は、2018年夏にアートスペース「ARToba」で行われたアーティスト・イン・レジデンスの結果です。リンダ・デニス（アーティスト）とユミ・マシキ（作曲家）は、鳥羽の人々と一緒に、創造的なスペースを提供する「ARToba」のオープン準備を行い、そして盆踊り、安楽島朝市、海女小屋体験等アクティビティに参加して鳥羽の風習についてリサーチを実施。リンダ・デニス出品の参加型作品は、2018年安楽島盆踊りのために制作されました。ユミ・マシキのサウンドスケープには、鳥羽でフィールドレコーディングされた音が含まれています（展示で用意されているQRコードを読取ると試聴可）。
アーティストは、鳥羽の人々の温かいおもてなしに深く感謝しています。作品を通して、感謝の気持ちが少しでも伝われば幸いです。

Toba Soundscape 1 (AMA-San Dream)

This piece was deeply inspired by encounters with Ama-san (free-diving fisher- women) and from hearing their stories in Toba where the tradition is maintained. The artist enjoyed the wonderful opportunity of tasting freshly caught seafood (especially the abalones!), and was able to capture the sea-whistle (Iso-bue) sound from an Ama-san in Ousatsu, Toba. The ‘Iso-bue’ is a unique whistling technique or breathing method that Ama-divers emit when resurfacing. The piece starts and ends with manipulated sounds of ‘Iso-bue’. As the average diving time for Ama-san is around 50 seconds (the length of a single breath), a 50-sec- ond-underwater-scene is inserted in the middle of the piece.

印象的だった鳥羽の海女さんたちのお話。いただいた海の幸は絶品。作品には海女さ んの磯笛の音を取り入れました(相差にて収録)。また、海女さんたちの一回の潜水時 間が平均50秒前後とのこと、作品にも海中シーンを50秒程挿入。

The Bon Festival dance in Arashima, Toba was a special experience for me. The song sung there is a-cappella. I had never heard a Bon Festival song sung with- out any instrumental accompaniment anywhere but Arashima in my life. The sound of the dancers’ wooden clogs (Geta) was distinctive. Also sound captured at the morning market in Arashima is heard in the piece. I would like to express my deep appreciation to people in Arashima for their warm hospitality.

安楽島の盆踊りに参加させていただきました。伴奏のない、歌声のみの盆踊りを体験し たのは初めて。カランコロンという下駄の音、子供達の笑い声、かき氷屋さんの氷を掻
く音。また、賑やかな安楽島朝市の音も取り入れました。安楽島の皆さん、集音させてい ただきありがとうございました。

Sound captured at the beach of Sakate Island is featured in the piece. This piece is rather personal, as the captured sound made me feel nostalgic, bringing back childhood memories of family summer holidays at the beach.

坂手島のビーチにて録音。録った音を聴いていたら、幼少の頃、毎年夏に家族で海に行 っていた記憶が蘇り、そんなノスタルジーをサウンドスケープに込めました。

Arashima Dance Net (Ami Kaburi)

This artwork was inspired by stories of the now dormant custom ‘ami kaburi’ of the Arashima Bon Dance Festival in Toba. In the custom of ‘ami kaburi’, which may be unique to this community, small groups of dancers at the Bon Dance Festival covered their heads with nets (fishing nets or mosquito nets) available in the area, and would move around trying to entice community members to join the dance by capturing them in the nets and drawing them into the festivities. This custom resonated with my creative theme of touch, and associated interests in connection, collaboration, and community, and inspired me to make this piece in the summer of 2018 for the Bon Dance Festival. This piece was worn by Arashi- ma community members, visiting Joshibi University students, and myself in this year’s Bon dance festivities.
リンダ・デニス 「安楽島ダンス・ネット(網かぶり)」

安楽島盆踊りのために制作された参加型作品 網、ワイヤーバスケット、ロープ 協力:有限会社 タケムラ、井上商店
このアート作品は、鳥羽の安楽島盆踊りにて催されていた『網かぶり』(近年は行われ ていなかった)のストーリーにインスパイアされています。安楽島独自の風習と考えられ る『網かぶり』は、盆踊りの際、まず数人のダンサーが一緒に一つの網(漁網または蚊帳 )を頭にかぶせて踊り始めます。そして、徐々に周りの人々を網に引き入れて、皆が踊り に加わっていく動きです。
『網かぶり』の風習は、私の創造的テーマ「touch (タッチ)」と共鳴し、そして私が日頃より 関心のある、コネクション(繋がり)、コラボレーション(協同)、コミュニティとの関連を強 く感じ、2018年夏の盆踊りのために作品を制作しました。この作品は、実際に盆踊りにて
、安楽島の人々、鳥羽を訪れていた女子美術大学の学生、私自身で『網かぶり』に用いら れました。
