Toba Stories Art Project: Ama Divers, Art and Culture
An exhibition of artworks and written text by students and faculty of Joshibi University of Art and Design.
This is the fifth Toba Stories Art Project. It aims to bring people “in touch” with ama diver culture through the power of art. The tradition of ama divers, predominantly women who free dive, goes back more than 2000 years, and Toba city has the largest number of ama divers in Japan. However, the population is decreasing, so it is our hope to bring inspiration to our students through connecting with this strong women-led tradition and spread knowledge to a wide audience through an exhibition and book documenting our activities.
The exhibited artworks are inspired by fieldwork conducted in October 2025, when Joshibi University faculty and students studying art & culture spent 5 days in Toba city. They did ocean related studies and met with ama divers to listen to their stories and gain firsthand experience of their lifestyle. Their research included visits to Toba Sea-Folk Museum, significant sites in Kuzaki, including ama huts and Ama-kazukime Shrine.
After returning to the Joshibi campus, in addition to making individual artworks, students engaged in groupwork to make displays related to the unique culture of ama divers of Kuzaki to introduce this to people in Japan and around the world.
Texts by Joshibi’s art and culture students and others are included in the exhibition and book to give additional insights.

鳥羽ストーリーズ・アートプロジェクト「海女と芸術文化」
女子美術大学の学生と教員による作品と文章の展覧会
第５回目となる「鳥羽ストーリーズ・アートプロジェクト」は、アートの力を通して多くの人々が海女文化に触れることを目的としています。
素潜りで漁をおこなう「あま」の起源は、2000年以上前にさかのぼります。現在鳥羽市は日本一の海女の数を誇る地域でありますが、近年海女の数の減少が進んでいます。
そこで、私たちは、力強い女性が導き、受け継いできた鳥羽の海女の伝統と、女子美術大学の学生をつなぐことで、インスピレーションを得るとともに、このプロジェクトを記録した展覧会と書籍で、より多くの人に海女文化について知っていただきたいと考えています。
展示作品は、芸術文化などを学ぶ女子美術大学の学生と教員が、2025年の10月に5日間、鳥羽市に滞在した際のフィールドワークから着想を得て制作されました。フィールドワークでは、海に関する調査をし、海女さんからお話を伺い、暮らしを直接体験し、鳥羽市立海の博物館、海女小屋や海士潜女神社がある国崎町の重要な場所も訪れてリサーチを行いました。
5日間の滞在を終え、大学に戻った後は、個人の作品制作と、国崎町の独自の海女文化を国内外に発信するための展覧会を作り上げるグループワークを行いました。
展覧会と書籍には、国際芸術文化専攻の学生や関係者による文章を掲載し、海女の文化とプロジェクトについて、さらに深く理解できるように構成しました。

女子美術大学の学生が鳥羽市で過ごした秋研修の経験について、小さなプレゼンテーション発表会を行います。
Joshibi University of Art and Design students will give short presentations about their research conducted in Toba City from 10 am – 12 noon on Friday 24 Oct 2025 at the Toba Fisheries Science Center.
Students taking classes in Art and Culture at Joshibi University of Art and Design stayed in Ohama-cho, Toba City for five days from October 20 to 24, 2025, to conduct research on the theme of the traditional culture of ama divers.
During their stay, they learned about Toba’s important cultural heritage from ama divers in the Kuzaki area and participated in lectures and workshops at the Mie University Fisheries Research Laboratory, Toba Fisheries Science Center, and Toba Sea-Folk Museum.
An exhibition of student works is scheduled to be held at the Toba Sea-Folk Museum from January to March 2026.
女子美術大学の芸術文化専攻などの学生が、海女の伝統文化というテーマについてリサーチするため、鳥羽市小浜町に2025年10月20日から24日の5日間滞在しました。
滞在中は、国崎地域の海女さんから鳥羽の大切な文化について学び、三重大学水産実験所、鳥羽市水産研究所、鳥羽市立海の博物館などで講義やワークショップに参加しました。
2026年1月〜３月には、鳥羽市立海の博物館にて学生作品展が開催される予定です。
